Solstice Circus, which features circus acts from Wonderle’s Big Top Adventures, animals from Independence Petting Farm and music by Rick Redington & The Luv, is the first of a series of summer events in downtown Rutland.    Similar to previous Friday events, Center Street in downtown Rutland will be closed to vehicular traffic.  Downtown businesses will expand out onto the streets and offer extended hours. 

The event is sponsored by Green Mountain Power’s Smart Power System.

Each year, as part of its larger grant program, DRP offers members of the special benefits tax district the opportunity to be awarded grants which can be applied to their overall marketing budget.

“The program is a wonderful way to assist businesses in our historic downtown with the execution of their strategic marketing plans’, stated Laura Conti of DRP marketing.   “In total, we award $5,000.00, with a maximum individual allowance of $1,000.00”, continued Conti.

Applicants must be constituents of Downtown Rutland’s special benefits tax district and must submit their request as part of a larger strategic and on-going marketing program.

The 2013 micro marketing grant program commences Wednesday, May 29, 2013.  Applications can be found at www.rutlanddowntown.com  within the ‘open for business tab’ and submissions must be received at the DRP office by 2:00PM Wednesday June 26, 2013.  Grant recipients will be notified by end of day Friday, June 28, 2013. In conjunction with the Devil’s Bowl Fan Festival on Saturday May 4, 2013, the Downtown Rutland Partnership hosted its first annual amateur car show.

Area residents were invited to enter their car into the competition for a chance to win one of three prizes.   All makes, models and years were eligible.

Attendees at the event cast ballots in three categories; Fan Favorite, Sportiest and Most Classic.

The winners were a baby blue 1957 Ford Thunderbird convertible in the most classic category, a ‘you-can’t-miss-it-yellow’ 1972 Chevy Nova in the sportiest category, and a black 1968 Fastback Mustang took the Fan Favorite category.

Highlighting vehicle financing and insurance options, the Vermont State Employees Credit Union and Liberty Mutual Insurance sponsored the winner’s prizes. The event will be conducted again in May 2014.

Downtown Rutland Partnership Completes 1^st Annual Green-up Downtown Day

Rutland, VT (May 3, 2013)  The Downtown Rutland Partnership (DRP) announced a successful Green-up day and extends its appreciation to volunteers and donors.

On Friday May 3^rd, the Downtown Rutland Partnership organized the first annual ‘Green-up Downtown Day’.   The event consisted of more than 40 volunteers given assigned areas within the special benefits tax district.   “Volunteers came mostly from downtown businesses, but we also had a great crew from The National Honor Society at Proctor High School “, said Laura Conti of DRP marketing.

“This will be an annual event to spring clean downtown Rutland, each year, on the day before the state-wide Green-up Vermont effort”, Conti continued.

“I had a ton of comments from passersby saying it looked like all of downtown was out cleaning and how much they appreciated the effort.  But the best part of the day was when Sal’s Downtown called and offered pizzas for the volunteers.  It was great to see the community working together”, stated Conti.

The list of downtown businesses who helped to spearhead the clean-up includes; CCV, Frogs & Lily Pads, Green Mountain Power, Rutland Optical, TD Bank, The Bardwell House, The Book Mobile, The Rutland Herald, The Rutland Recreation Department and The Yellow Deli.  Special thanks to the Department of Public Works for loaning brooms and shovels.

On May 4^th,  DRP will host an amateur car show on the streets of downtown Rutland.  Residents and visitors to the region are invited to enter their specialty cars in a chance to win ‘Best in Class’ prizes.

“So many area residents have a summer car that is their pride and joy – but they rarely get to show them off” said Laura Conti, of DRP Marketing.  “Last year, Devil’s Bowl Speedway showcased their race cars and drivers on the streets of downtown and nearly 1,000 car enthusiasts attended.  We thought it would be a great opportunity for some of those enthusiasts to participate directly by bringing down their own cars’.

The event is open to all makes and models of specialty cars.  “It might be a vintage Mustang, a Model T , an antique truck …it’s that car that you spend more time polishing than driving.  There are no age requirements for vehicles. If you have a fun new car, you can enter that too.  Our intention isn’t to turn anyone away, but with limited space, we will need to ensure that each car has some ‘show‘ value“, added Conti.

DRP is in the final stages of finalizing the specifics of the Amateur Car event including ‘Best In Class’ categories (which will be voted on by attendees) and sponsors, but is prepared to receive contest entries immediately.  DRP intends to have all entries received by April 29, 2013.  The event itself will start at 9:00AM on Saturday, May 4,2013.   This event will take place the day following ‘Green-up Downtown’ activities on Friday, May 3^rd – a downtown-wide spring cleaning initiative mimicking Green-up Vermont.

The 2012 Devil’s Bowl event was a huge success, bringing +30 cars with drivers to downtown. This year the race car portion of the event is billed as ‘The Devil’s Bowl Downtown Fan Festival’ with a car parade, ‘Best Appearing Car’ contest, Pit Stop contest, season pass raffle and many more fun activities – including the DRP Amateur Car showcase.  Devil’s Bowl is using this years’ event to promote the Spring Green Season Opener at Devil’s Bowl on Sunday, May 5^th.

“We are thrilled to partner with Downtown Rutland for a second year”, stated Justin St. Louis of Devil’s Bowl Speedway.  “We were very happy with the event last year, and this year we hope to bring up to 50 cars and put on quite a show”.
