The Arts Arrive in Rutland

In the height of the
Art Deco era, circa 1930-40, the train was an important
part of Rutland County’s creative economy.
The train carried entertainers from Boston and New
York to Rutland. From Rutland they traveled the
bumpy roads to the outlying towns via roadsters
and jalopies. Musicians jammed under the Rutland
street lamps and couples would spontaneously start
dancing to the beat of jazz and tango improv. Today
Rutland claims two Art Deco style buildings and
the creative economy is celebrating a resurgence
which is picking up steam just as the old trains
did in and out of Rutland.
