ABOUT THE PROJECT
 

ALL ABOARD RUTLAND…will transform the streetscape of Rutland into a rail yard of artist-decorated train engines. The oversized toy trains will celebrate the creativity of our local arts community and recalling and celebrating Rutland’s railroad history which fueled Rutland’s economy in the 1800’s.

VISION: A Fun Public Art Promotion for the Arts in Rutland

- To showcase Rutland as a tourist destination
- To celebrate Rutland’s train history
- To foster community pride
- To promote public access to the arts and arts education programs
- To develop the creative economy concept in the Rutland community.

HISTORY

WHY TRAINS?
When you think of Rutland’s history… you think of the railroad. What better way to bring the community together to celebrate Rutland and its history. The Rutland railroad dates back to the 1800’s and was the economic engine to the region in its heyday.

RUTLAND’S TRAIN HISTORY:
Nov. 6, 1847: Rutland & Washington Railroad chartered
Nov. 13, 1848: Rutland & Whitehall Railroad chartered to build a line parallel to Rutland & Washington to Castleton
Dec. 18, 1849: First train runs over Rutland & Burlington on Bellows Falls-Burlington line


The turn of the century Rutland Railroad
station was the center of activity.
